Onorato Rocks First Day of 2016 Melges 32 European Championship

7 July 2016

Riva del Garda, Italy - Opening day in Italy at the 2016 Melges 32 European Championship fired off three great races putting the legendary Vincenzo Onorato helming Mascalzone Latino in the early leadership position. Onorato never once lost sight of the podium cashing in a 2-3-1 daily scoreline that has him five comfortable points ahead of the pack.

Relatively new to the fleet this year, Matteo Balestrero’s Giogi felt the full effects of a great day on the water to be seated in second overall. International Class President Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio sailing G-SPOT completes the top three.

Fourteen fantastic, ultra super-charged teams representing eight countries are present to vie for the highly coveted European Championship trophy.

Racing commenced on time, under sunny skies and 16 knots of classic south wind ‘Ora’ in Riva del Garda. And, with the completion of three races, three different winners were crowned. Serena di Lapigio (Race One), Norway’s Lasse Petterson sailing Pippa (Race Two) and Onorato (Race Three) took home a bullet each.

The International Class is thrilled to welcome some new faces and teams to the fleet, and especially proud to have them racing the Corinthian division in Riva del Garda. Kim Haugaard at the helm of the Dutch entry Challenger, and Martin Reintjes on Caipirinha are tough competitors in every respect.

After Day One, Haugaard leads the division. Unfortunately, Reintjes broke his mainsail during the first race of the day and was unable to return to the course.

Racing continues on Friday, 08 July. A total of ten races maximum are scheduled with a discard of each team’s worst score at the completion of Race Six.
