Charleston Shimmers

17 April 2016

Charleston, SC -  A down-to-the wire race day at the 2016 U.S. National Championship being held in conjunction with Sperry Charleston Race Week brought the competition to a complete head as the final two races for the fleet unfolded. Another stunning day on the water with breeze and sunshine gave way to a tiebreaker, that ultimately decided who the next Melges 20 U.S. National Champion would be.

Russ Lucas on Shimmer, submitted a 1-3 score on Sunday to become the Class’s eighth U.S. National Champion! He evened out the points chase on the final day with overnight fleet leader Daniel Theilman on Kuai settling for second place overall.

In third is Canada’s Justin Quigg on Character 2.0. An extra round of congratulations are also extended to Quigg and his team which included Julian Plante and Nick Cleary as they are the 2016 Melges 20 Corinthian U.S. National Champions.

Charleston may have been one of Quigg’s best events ever. With three bullets to his name this weekend, this fantastic Canadian entry is clearly on the fast track to big success this season!

The final two races were hard fought. In addition to Lucas and Quigg taking the wins, other teams that excelled included Tom Kassberg’s Flygfisk who finished up second place in the final race to land fifth overall, Yuriy Morozov on Russtrans claimed a nice fourth in Race Nine, as did Corinthian runner-up John Brown on Blind Squirrel in Race Ten.

As always, any event is only made special by the owners and teams that support it by coming out and racing. The International Melges 20 Class is appreciative of the those that participated and most especially, to the Carolina Yacht Club, Melges USA and the awesome event organization and race management of Sperry Charleston Race Week by the CORA (Charleston Ocean Race Association) and its countless volunteers!

Hot fun in the summertime! Sure there is some great racing abroad in Europe, but also the forthcoming May Tuning and Training Regatta comes up soon, where we encourage all teams to join in on the fun… It’s a great way to get ready for the Sail Newport Regatta in July!
