Charleston Midnight Blue Magic

15 April 2016

Charleston, SC - On the first day of the 2016 U.S. National Championship being held in conjunction with Sperry Charleston Race Week, reigning title holder Jason Michas on Midnight Blue delivered a 1-1-2-3 scoreline to take an early lead on what could be his third-consecutive trophy.

California’s Daniel Thielman on Kuai came closest to catching Michas by submitting a phenomenal results card of his own. His first place finish in Race Three made him one of three daily race winners.

Third place overall goes to Russ Lucas on Shimmer. Lucas is fresh off of a mini-hiatus, clearly not missing a Melges 20 beat. After shaking the dust off in Race One, Two and Three, Lucas hit it big to win Race Four.

Despite the wet and cooler than usual conditions, four fun races were completed in 10-15 knots of breeze, with an equal mix of Charleston Harbor racing hospitality and tight competition.

Rounding out the top five as the fleet anticipates more racing on Saturday, is Canada’s Justin Quigg on Character 2.0 in fourth overall finishing the day with a nice 5-5-3-4.

All the way from Russia is Yuriy Morozov on Russotrans in fifth. Morozov also raced the recently completed Miami Winter Series, and with his second place finish in Race Four today, he has clearly set a new tone for his very first Sperry Charleston Race Week. John Brown’s Blind Squirrel currently leads the Corinthian Division. His best result of the day was fourth in Race Two. Reigning Corinthian Charleston Champ Paul Currie on Wild Deuces is second followed by Lance Smotherman on Details in third.
