Carroll Remains in Control in Porto Ercole For a Second Day

12 July 2015

Porto Ercole, Italy - It was yet another very late day of racing at the 2015 Audi-Tron Sailing Series organized by B.Plan Sport & Events (BPSE) in cooperation with Melges Europe. Saturday produced only two races with Jason Carroll aboard Argo maintaining his overall lead. Carroll, who is also the Melges 32 Class’ only two-time, back-to-back World Champion (Porto Rotondo, 2013 and Miami, 2014), has extended his advantage to seven points over Roberto Tomasini Grinover’s Robertissima in second, and third-place Alessandro Rombelli’s STIG.

Under shifty moderate breezes, Richard Goransson’s Inga From Sweden took the first windward mark of Race Four in top-spot stride, followed by Edoardo Lupi and Massimo Pessina’s Torpyone, Carroll and Andrea LaCorte’s Vitamina. Downwind Goransson relinquished his lead to a strong Lupi/Pessina. A very exciting downwind run to the finish saw the breeze diminish. Carroll found a new gear and the right shifts to take the win, bringing LaCorte along to take second. Tomasini Grinover did a masterful job taking over third. Lupi/Messina finished fourth. Andrea Ferrari’s Spirit of Nerina was fifth.

Rombelli, La Corte, Mauro Mocchegiani’s Audi-E-Tron and and Fritz Homann’s Wilma hammered out the beginnings of the final race of the day. Rombelli took the lead at the top mark, held on and extended for the win. A very heated battle however ensued between Homann, Mocchegiani and LaCorte. In the end it was Homann having a fantastic race to finish second. Filippo Pacinotti’s Brontolo moved up and in to take third, Mocchegiani in fourth and Valentin Zavadnikov’s Synergy completed the top five finishes.

The final day of racing happens Sunday.
