Porto Venere, Italy - Atop the field of eighteen impeccable Melges 32 teams and with three races now complete, the youngest helmsman in attendance — 23 year-old Dalton DeVos aboard Delta has a tight, one-point lead over Alec Cutler’s hedgehog in second overall. Another point back is Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio’s G-SPOT in third.

A simply stunning 14 knots of breeze out of the Southwest cracked open the start of Race One in Porto Venere. DeVos took immediate charge after an initial general recall. Serena di Lapigio’s G-Spot put down a fantastic chase as did Edoardo Pavesio’s FRA MARTINA. DeVos gained big on the final upwind beat to secure the lead and win the race. Serena di Lapigio and Pavesio held on respectively to finish second and third. Edoardo Lupi and Massimo Pessina’s Torpyone stayed strong to place fourth with Cutler in fifth.

Cutler’s ‘hogs’ found just the right groove in Race Two. With a slight breeze shift and drop in velocity it wasn’t easy. The early lead was occupied by Roberto Tomasini Grinover’s powerful Robertissima team, then overtaken by Andrea LaCorte’s Vitamina/Celadrin at the second upwind mark. On the last downwind run, Cutler poured on the speed to claim first, followed by LaCorte, Tomasini Grinover and Roberto Mazzucato’s Margherita in fourth. Russia’s Valentin Zavadnikov aboard Synergy GT completed the top five.

The third and final race of the day went to the sensational Lupi/Messina partnership. After Turkish fleet newcomer Ahmet Eker on Eker fired up his Melges 32 for the start of Race Three, his early lead at the top mark would be short-lived, but grand none-the-less for this virtual Class first-timer. A heated battle ensued for position between Lupi/Messina, DeVos, Zavadnikov, Mazzucato, Serena di Lapigio and Tomasini Grinover. DeVos felt the effects of another near-perfect race to finish second, and Zavadnikov finally had a satisfying race to come third.

Racing continues on Saturday with three more races.
