Melges 24 Italian Championship in Scarlino: Giogi of Matteo Balestrero Wins, Maitech Named First Corinthian Overall

Scarlino, Italy - Giogi helmed by Matteo Balestrero, with the former world champion Nico Celon calling tatctics, conqueres in the light wind of Scarlino – Tuscany the Melges 24 Italian Open National Championship 2013.

The spectacular event featured more than thirty boats coming from eleven nations. The event, organized by Club Nautico Scarlino, crowned Ballestrero’s team (together with Davide di Maio, Cristiano Giannetti and Simona Benelli) as Champions after 8 races completed.

Giogi showed off a consistent speed and higher performances during all the weekend raced in very light wind conditions (2-4-9-1-2-12-6-7 as partials). Second place went to Altea of Andrea Racchelli with the podium completed by Maidollidis of Gianluca Perego (with Giovanni Pizzati on helm and Niccolò Bianchi calling tactics).

Fourth place for EFG Bank, the boat helmed by Chris Rast. Fifth position for Maitech owned by Claudio Ceradini with Andrea Pardini on helm, grabbed the title in the Corinthian division title.

The Melges 24 fleet once again demonstrated its vitality in a great regatta which saw strong duels and top level performances with great champions on the water (Nicola Celon, Flavio Favini) competing side by side with some newcomers and corinthians crews.

Torbole, 26 – 28 July: Torbole Melges 24 Week / European Sailing Series Act 3
Medemblik, 16 – 24 August: Melges 24 European Championship 2013 / European Sailing Series Act 4
The Melges 24 World Championship will be held in San Francisco (USA) from 30 September to 5 October.
