16th Edition of Zenda University Wraps Up, 2013 Melges MC Scow Midwinters Fires Up With 80+ Entries

14 March 2013

Where is Zenda University? Well, this week the location was the Lake Eustis Sailing Club in Eustis, Florida. The official site of the 80+ MC Midwinter Championship. Sun, palm trees, wind and MC Scow Sailing. Real Fun!

This is the 16th annual Zenda University Course at Lake Eustis. 16 years now!!!!

The Melges Zenda University always kicks off the MC Scow Midwinter Championship. Two days of intense training on and off the water just prior to the official regatta. With a pyramid of fundamentals to focus on and accomplish (see below). The course is limited to 20 participants so that the coaches can give personal attention to their boats while on the trailer or while racing. The course is run in a regatta format with official racing with inspirational coaching mixed in. This year we had a total of 14 races over two days. Well over 25 practice starts. Drills and on the water visual demonstrations.

"Conditions were sunny, windy, light, medium, rainy, flat water, chop - we had it all this year and we all learned a lot! There is nothing like this, anywhere. Great instructors, personal coaching, private tuning and lots of fun. All with a nice steak dinner with wine! These Melges/North Sails guys do it all", said Jeff Nicholas from Clear Lake, Iowa.

What is a typical day at Zenda University like? Here is a brief run down of a ZU day.

730am instructor meeting and plan.
8am breakfast for all participants - breakfast meaning eggs, pancakes, fresh fruit, bacon, sausage - fresh and hot!
9am kick off for the day. On land instruction and review of our topics for the day.
10am sailing until 12:30 then it is lunch - a fresh lunch at LESC with coaching during the lunch hour.
More sailing from 1:30-4:30 with final day wrap up.
Steak dinner at 7-9pm

Then we do it all over again the next day.

The end result is dramatically improved MC sailors. The end result is a group of 20 sailors that are really psyched about Melges Racing! Fun on and off the water!!!

This years coaching team was Jim Gluek, Eric Hood, Ted Keller and Andy Burdick. A special thanks goes out to Monty for his fantastic video coverage and review along with June for helping Andy do the starts and scores. Thank you!

Melges MC racing is fun! The new North Z-1 Mainsail is fast. Many of the students were sailing with their new Z-1 during the class and many more will have them at the Midwinter Championship. You will want to be one of the first to have this new design on your lake. The new North Sails Z-1 main is really nice!!!

New Melges MC's are coming off the production line for this Spring and Summer!
