Tomasini Grinover Regains The 2013 OtterBox® Melges 32 VISS Lead After Nine Races

24 February 2013

Virgin Gorda, BVI - Under classic island conditions, the International Melges 32 Class Association (IM32CA) conducted three more races on Saturday bringing the total to nine complete of the ten 2013 OtterBox® Melges 32 Virgin Islands Sailing Series, Event No. 1 in Virgin Gorda races scheduled, hosted by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS). Very exciting, short-track style racing was the theme of the day as three more heats played out placing Roberto Tomasini Grinover'sRobertissima atop the field once more. In second overall is Alex Jackson aboard Leenabarca and Ryan DeVos on Volpe is third.

Race one of the day was noting short of spectacular and very, very entertaining, most especially the final downwind run. An all clear start put Tomasini Grinover around the mark in first, but downwind DeVos accelerated to pass Tomasini Grinover. Ryan extended his lead substantially throughout the next few legs with Tomasini Grinover and Jackson putting down a full chase for the top spot. A dramatic last run found Ryan in trouble on a bad jibe, providing an unforgiving opportunity for Tomasini Grinover to take the win a half-a-boat length ahead at the line. DeVos settled for frustrating second while Jackson came third.

Tomasini Grinover went on to prove that Jason Carroll aboard Argo isn't the only team capable of master three bullets in one day. He too aced races two and three of the day for a complete fleet shut out, putting him atop the field once again, six points ahead.

For ovenight leader Carroll it was a tough day with many costly mistakes including a foul at the weathermark resulting in a two-turn penalty in the zone, a race that at the time he was winning. Carroll incurred even more trouble with a destroyed spinnaker on the final run to the finish of the final race of the day, ultimately costing his team several positions on the board. All this summed up a fourth place overall seat for the day. Richard Goransson's Inga From Sweden rounded out the top five.

One final race remains to be raced. It is scheduled for Sunday, February 24, 2013. First and last warning signal of the event is at 11.00 BVI.

The 2013 OtterBox® Melges 32 Virgin Islands Sailing Series consists of three exquisite events and is the first ever of its kind for the progressive sportboat class. Act one of the three-part series, the BVI Sportboat Regatta takes place this weekend, February 21-24, hosted by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Virgin Gorda. The second event happens in conjunction with the International Rolex Regatta in the U.S. Virgin Islands on March 22-24, 2013. The grand finale of the Series, the 2013 Caribbean Championship happens in late April on the luxurious and very private Peter Island.

The IM32CA Press Team is excited to be in the BVI, however on-the-water updates are expected to occur. The connection is slow, so we appreciate everyone's patience as we plan to update the Official Melges 32 Blog regularly. Periodic updates will be posted to Facebook.
