Vallivero's 'Turnover' Leader Of A Very Short Ranking

21 April 2012

Four teams within four points, after the first three races, confirmed all expectations for the opening leg of the Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series. The results prove that predicting any outcome of an Audi Melges 20 event is impossible.

The presence of changing weather conditions forced crews to wait over long periods of time, spent between the sea and the comfortable rooms of the Yacht Club Marina di Loano, organizer of the event together with B-Plan Sports & Events, Circolo Nautico Loano and Melges Europe. Racing did not commence until late in the afternoon with an ever-attentive Race Committee chaired by Fabio Barasso, escorting the twenty-one strong Audi Melges 20 fleet courageously out onto the course.

At the end of a long day, Renato Vallivero's Turnover is the leader. With Marco Perazzo and Enrico Fonda as crew, Vallivero finished the day with a one point margin over Gold Cup Champion Alessandro Rombelli's STIG and tactician Lorenzo Bressani. Pecceré, helmed by Mirko de Falco is seated in second overall. In third came, Fremito d’Arja sailed by owner Dario Levi with a Casale-Lagi crew.

The day saw amazing performances from Federico Albano’s 3Menda, all special thanks to calls by Giulio Desiderato and Andrea Trani. Albano finishes in fifth place overall, ahead of the fleet newcomer Lorenzo Del Felice aboard 2010 Gold Cup Champion Francesco Farnetti's Reggini Sailing Team with Andrea Musone and Alberto Bolzan as tactician in sixth. Manfredi Vianini Tolomei’s Maolca (7-10-5) is seventh.

There was much satisfaction for Marco Franchini-Sandro Montefusco's Mezza Luna who won the second race and remain eighth overall in the provisional ranking. Giancarlo Capolino's Legionario, assisted by Francesco Ivaldi finished ninth. Rounding out the top ten is Nerone, chartered by a new owner Antonio Sodo Migliori.

The first leg of Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series end tomorrow. Barrasso hopes to complete three additional races with a warning signal at 10.30. Time limit for the last starting will be 15.30.

Weather reports speak of weak wind and rough sea. This is what remains of a storm that would possibly affect the area of Loano overnight.
