Bribon-Movistar Continues To Lead Third Merchbanc Melges 32 Barcelona Series Event

29 January 2012

Marc de Antonio's Spanish Bribon-Movistar won two of today's three races, placing him one point ahead of Series leader, Japanese Team Bros. for the overall lead.

The Melges 32 fleet waited nearly two hours to commence the day. Real Club Nautico de Barcelona's Race Committee signaled for the first start around 1 o'clock in the afternoon. Needless to say, the conditions were less than ideal ushering in cold rain and wind for Race 1 of three scheduled heats.

With 6-8 knots of breeze and a course bearing of 015, de Antonio managed a flawless start despite an aggressive field of players. His excellent performance put him ahead for the win. Germany's Christian Soyka aboard FRAM IMMAC took a proud second, Cabinet Manager Jon Obeso was third. Team Bros. struggled scoring fourth.

The breeze maintained steady for Race Two with de Antonio and tactician, Olympic medallist Hugo Rocha, dominating for his second win of the day. Soyka was determined to keep up at a great pace to finish second again, Team Bros. in third.

The last race of the day was by far, the most intense. Soyka suffered a setback due to gear failure enabling Team Bros. to overtake for second at the last windward mark, chasing de Antonio for the overall race lead. The day's final standings put them in front for the event lead, but one point away from the final series lead.

After the day's events, Team Bros. still stands as the leader of the Merchbanc Melges 32 Barcelona Winter Series. Marc de Antonio holds steadfast for second, Soyka is third on the podium.

"Today was a tough day," said Manu Weiller aboard Team Bros. "We have an entirely brand new Japanese crew at this event, though we did improve, little by little. Despite a big change in crew, we expect to continue our circuit lead and keep the edge right on through the last event."

Races on Sunday kick-off at 11.00 where three more windward-leeward races are scheduled.
