Naofumi Kamei's Team Bros Leads Barcelona Merchbanc Melges 32 Winter Series

19 December 2011

Intense might best describe the second day of the Merchbanc Barcelona Melges 32 Winter Series, organized by the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona. At 10 am the Race Committee gave the first start of four races scheduled.

With an intensity of 15 knots from 330°, the Melges 32 fleet began a heat that was to be marked by constant changes of position. As in the previous races, a revived IMMAC FRAM helmed by Christian Soyka showed his credentials as one of the best boats in the fleet, second place was for Marc de Antonio’s Bribon Movistar, who led the comeback of a tough Naofumi Kamei aboard Team Bros, never out from the podium positions.

During the second race of the day, sailed with 12 knots, things returned to normal, with Kamei dominating from start to finish followed by the combative Robertissimaand Bribon Movistar, who were slowly finding the feeling on the race course. It was unfortunate for Nueva Bahía de Pasaia- GABINETEGESTOR.COM of Jon Obeso as his halyard broke leaving him no choice but to retire from the race.

The final race of only 0.8 miles and an intensity of only 6 knots very shifty, saw as a resurgence of Robert Tomasini Grinover’s Robertissima, a team that seems to be more comfortable with lighter winds than strong. Second place went to Javier Sherk’s Gunter also performed an exceptional regatta. Finally, the third was grabed by Kamei, who surpassed de Antonio in the last downwind.

After this race, the Committee decided to end the second round of the Merchbanc Barcelona Melges 32 Winter Series as the weather conditions did not warrant a new quality heat.

In the overall standings of the second venue of the Merchbanc Barcelona Melges 32 Winter Series, the winner was Japan's Kamei's Team Bros, followed by Spanish de Antonio’s Bribon Movistar and the German Christian Soyke’s IMMAC FRAM.

As for the general results (one discard has been applied) and Kamei leads with 12 points, just in front of de Antonio (16 points) and Soyke (24 points).

The third round of Merchbanc Barcelona Melges 32 Winter Series will be held on 13, 14 and 15 January at the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona. Ten boats are expected for the third venue.
