Team Bros Increases Its Advantage At MerchBanc Melges 32 Winter Series

19 December 2011

The fleet involved in the Merchbanc Barcelona Melges 32 Winter Series had to wait over three hours for a decision from the Race Committee to run races scheduled for today. At 2 o'clock, the wind was over 35 knots, far about the class' wind speed limit, but fortunately it decreased aas the boats arrived to the starting line.

The first race was characterized by a really strong mistral about 25-30 knots. After a wrong start Marc de Antonio’s Bribon Movistar was forced to choose the right side of the field, which ultimately proved to be correct in their fight with the Germans of IMMAC FRAM and the Spanish-Japanese of Team Bros. The struggle was won by de Antonio after an excellent final mark. Second place Soyka was second and Naofumi Kamei's Team Bros came third.

The second race, which showed similar intensities between 20 and 25 knots, seenGunter helmed by Javier Sherk as protagonist. Gunter demonstrate what a Melges 32 with an excellent crew on board can do, especially in extreme wind condition: pure performance and rushes of adrenalin.

Finally, the second heat of the day was for Kamei thanks to a superb final downwind, just behind them the excellent Gunter and the Catalans of Bribon Movistar.

With a second and a victory, Team Bros mantains, yet increases his lead. The provisional results reveal that de Antonio loses ground placing Soyka twelve points from the top.

Tomorrow at 11 am the second day of the second leg of Mechbanc Barcelona Melges 32 Winter Series will begin and three windward - leeward are scheduled.
