2011 Audi Melges 20 National Championship - Take Two

10 November 2011

November 10, 2011 (Miami, FL) - The Audi Melges 20 fleet in the U.S.A. takes a second stab at holding its U.S. National Championship this weekend in sunny Miami, Florida, hosted by Coconut Grove Sailing Club (GCSC). More than thirty teams originating from three countries have arrived and have been thoroughly enjoying the brilliant Biscayne Bay conditions, in full anticipation of a nice, breezy forecast.

Last August, the fleet anticipated the commencement of its third Nationals in Newport, hosted by Sail Newport. Unfortunately, an approaching Category 3 Hurricane Irene scared away any possibility of holding the event. Some teams were quick to flee the scene, while others, despite the large, threatening storm, managed to get in some informal sailing no matter what.

Top teams include defending National Champion Michael Kiss on Bacio, Paul Reilly's Red Sky Sailing Team, Mary Anne Ward's M & M Racing and Tony Tabb's Elevation Racing. Fresh in from Italy, ready to take on stiff North American competition is Claudio Recchi on Let's Roll

A multitude of new faces are present in Miami. The Class is very proud to welcome several new owners to the fleet — Marcus Eagan on Cajun Underwriting, Bill Griffin on Kill Bill, Wes Whitmyer, Jr., on Slingshot, Mark Plaxton on INTACand Bruce Broussard on Velocity.

Registration concluded on Thursday, followed by a Skipper's Meeting and opening event celebration at GCSC. PRO Ron Rostorfer anticipates a 3-3-2 racing schedule that begins on Friday and runs through until Sunday.
