Kilroy Strikes Back, Carroll Maintains The Lead In Palma

4 August 2011

Palma de Mallorca, Spain - On one hand, Jason Carroll's Argo took on the day with a 2-3 score line, in an attempt to defend his lead in the Melges 32 fleet at Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre, organized by theReal Club Nautico de Palma. On the other, an incredible effort by John Kilroy's Samba Pa Ti scored two bullets today, climbing up the leaderboard to finish in overall third.

This is, very briefly, a summary of the third day of racing. With a 12-knot westerly, the choppy seas proved to be exciting yet painfully rough for the large spectator fleet.

Weather conditions were clearly favorable for Carroll's Argo, regardless of the breeze they were in great form. The result: a satisfying 2nd and 3rd enabling them to secure the overall lead. For Kilroy'sSamba Pa Ti, they just keep getting better race after race. After a 13th place in the event's opening race, Kilroy's crew with Vasco Vascotto on tactics has been in a constant up trend. The proof: today's two bullets has positioned him within striking distance from Luca Lalli's B-LinSailing holding firm in second overall.

Twelve points behind Carroll's crew with Cameron Appleton calling tactics, are the team of Lalli and tactician Lorenzo Bressani. They have to keep a watchful eye, as not only is Kilroy on his heels, but also Edoardo Lupi's Torpyone, Lanfranco Cirillo's Fantastica and Geoffrey Pierini's Shakedown. Their chances of reaching podium status might get a push after the discard.

Another Melges 32 with an excellent performance today was John Porter's Full Throttle. John Porter and tactician Jonathan McKee, following a number of average races, have finally been able to get in sync with the complicated race courses of Palma bay allowing them to climb up to eighth place, right behind Spain's Marc de Antonio's Bribon-Movistar in seventh overall.

The 30th edition of Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre will continue tomorrow with another two more races on schedule. It is worth pointing out that teams will have the right to a discard after the completion of the eighth race.
