Carroll Maintains The Copa Del Rey Audi Mapfre Melges 32 Lead

3 August 2011

Palma de Mallorca, Spain - Weather conditions might have changed in Palma, but the identity of the leader in the Melges 32, the key class participating at the 30th edition of the Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre, did not. Indeed, both races of the second day of the event, organized by the Real Club Nautico de Palma, did nothing but strengthen the leadership of Jason Carroll's Argo. Carroll's top-notch U.S. crew featuring Cameron Appleton on tactics, scored a perfect bullet in the first race. A fifth place in the second race of the day didn't penalize the Americans in a fleet of 17 yachts.

The strong right shifts and much calmer seas, in comparison to yesterday's strong swell, looked to spice up the races by adding some variability potentially providing and advantage to team looking to advance, but for some it didn't turn out that way.

Carroll's perfect performance marked the day, but a consistent Lanfranco Cirillo aboard Fantasticaclimbed to second position overall. They are 7 points behind the Americans, a gap that can still be bridged, halfway through the event.

Luca Lalli's crew on B-LinSailing are still holding on to their podium spot, but barely, paying the price of a mediocre second race. They are just one point clear of Fantastica.

Two of yesterday's top teams dropped down the leader board, Oscar Strugstad's Dawn Raid and Peter Rogers' Highlife slipped to finish eighth and ninth respectively. Two new ones moved into the top five, Geoff Pierini's Shakedown with Steve Hunt as tactician, a team that has many miles under their belt in this class, and Edoardo Lupi's Torpyone with tactician Branko Brcin. Both teams carry a string of single-digit scores.

The 30th edition of the Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre resumes on Thursday with two more races. It is worth pointing out, a single discard goes info effect after the completion of race eight.

Last but certainly not least, on the terrace of the Real Club Nautico de Palma's restaurant, the Melges 32 class officially announced that the 2011 Melges 32 World Championship, set to take place on September 20-24. Read The Full Copa Del Rey Audi Mapfre Press Release
