Audi Sailing Series Commences In Naples, Italy With The ‘150° Unita’ of Italy Regatta, Over 20 Teams Representing 8 Nations Unite The Best of International Sailing.

The 2011 Audi Sailing Series is back with a double appointment featuring the Melges 32 and the Audi Melges 20. The first weekend, hosted by Circolo Canottieri Napoli, will feature the perfect warm-up — the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy Regatta. The Audi Melges 20 kicks off its season on 25-27 March. 

"We are starting the season on March 17," said Riccardo Simoneschi, event organizer. "And, given the combination of Italy's birthday, Audi decided to spice up the program with a warm-up regatta, appropriately named the '150° Unita' of Italy. They accepted the proposal because they consider it the perfect opportunity to celebrate the Republic, but also the Audi Sailing Series which is quite ideal for all involved," further commented Simoneschi. "It will be the only international racing scheduled for that day."

On the starting line, over 20 Melges 32s from Czechoslovakia, Spain, Great Britain, Germany, Holland, United States, France and Italy that include Olympic champions and leaders in America's Cup, the pinnacle in international sailing. 

Teams named to beat are definitely B-Lin (also voted best newcomer, and winner of the 2010 Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series and World Champion) with Lorenzo Bressani and Flavio Favini, and Lanfranco Cirillo's Fantastica with Vasco Vascotto and Claudio Celon. Carlo Alberini's Calvi is another to watch as he dominated the top of the final standings of the 2010 Audi Sailing Series. The list doesn’t stop there. There are many more high-profile Italian and international players such as Francesco Bruni and Vincenzo Onorato on Mascalzone Latino, Gabriele Benussi and Riccardo Simoneschi aboard Armonia Audi F.lli Giacomel, the Bodini brothers of Marco and Lorenzo on Carlo Perrone’s Atlantica 19, the Cassinari’s will sail Filippo Pacinotti’s Brontolo, Matteo Ivaldi and Sandro Montefusco will accompany Mauro Mocchegiani’s Rush Diletta, and Stefano Rizzi and Paolo Cian join forces with Antonello Morina on Sei Tu 32.

The foreign fleet is strong with John Kilroy’s Samba Pa Ti, and 2010 Melges 32 European Champion Joe Woods’ Red.

The class welcomes fleet newcomer and the last born of His Majesty Juan Carlos de Bourbon, Marc de Antonio Altimera’s Bribon employees the tactical efforts of Hugo Rocha. There are equal the number of Olympic medals and World Champions such as Nathan Wilmot, Morgan Reeser, Hugh Styles Bouwe Bekking, Lars Thiellisen, and Christian Pontieu and Pascal Rambeau.
