(Scarlino, Italy) — The second round of the 2010 Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series in Europe takes place this weekend with an impressive and exciting 33 entries. The bulk of the entries reside in Italy with others traveling from Germany and the USA.

For the International Audi Melges 20 Class, this is a major milestone in its short but progressive history. It is the largest fleet to-date since the circuit began in Spring 2009. With this achievement, surely the enthusiasm of those that race will grow further and continue to raise the bar both in number and caliber.

Assuming the pole position is series leader Renato Vallivero on Turnover. Lerici was the first time Vallivero competed in the Audi Melges 20 fleet, beating out second overall Francesco Farneti on Reggini Sailing Team and Luca Domenici on Notaro Team in third.

For Scarlino, the win really belongs to anyone as the fleet awaits performances from class heavyweights and stalwarts such as defending series champion Benedetto Giallongo on Value Team, Stefano di Properzio on Hulk,Federico Albano on 3Menda, Lanfranco Cirillo on Fantastica, Marco Morina on Sei Tu 20, Carlo Alberini on Calvi Network, Fausto Rubbini on Thule and Federico Stocchi on Cheyenne.

Traveling from the United States, Audi Melges 20 Class Association Chairman Marc Hollerbach from Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. on Fu, and 2010 Charleston Race Week Champion Michael Kiss on Bacio are in attendance. Since last year, Kiss has been entertaining the idea of broadening his Audi Melges 20 racing experience to Europe. Kiss will be sailing with his family this weekend. Fifteen-year-old son Mitchell and 17-year-old Morgan will be aboard. Morgan will be at the helm.

In addition to the roster of teams slated to attend, famed Italian sailor and 2009 Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series Champion Claudio Recchi returns on Team 93, breaching his ‘retirement from sailing’ plans to participate.

Friday was a day of preparation, practice and registration. Now with the day complete, heated competition is in store on Saturday and Sunday.
