Fantastica Thinks Big, Calvi Pure Network

26 March 2010

In a beautiful 15 knots of breeze and perfect sea conditions, the Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series, Event No. 1 kicked off with three races.

Lanfranco Cirillo’s Fantastica immediately lit the fuse of the series, with a mastery skill set and perfect choices by tactician Michele Paoletti, ultimately proving he was the team to beat. Melges 32 newcomer Luca Lalli on B Lin Sailing.com with Lorenzo Bressani on tactics was very quick to assume second place. In third, Mauro Mocchegiani on Rush Diletta with Matteo Ivaldi in the decision room closed the door for third, ahead of defending series champion Carlo Alberini on Calvi Network finishing fourth.

Race two saw more of Cirillo dominating the day. An absolutely perfect start at the pin end, then favoring the left side of the track convincingly gave him the advantage required to rule the day. Gabriele Benussi, calling tactics aboard Alberini’s Calvi Network allowed him to make all the right moves for second place with Lalli rounding out the top three.

Things seem to really heat up for race three as clearly Cirillo won the pin end start, that ultimately resulted in a general recall. The second start revealed Cirillo looking to start center of the line, then having to choose the right side. It was a tough move on Cirillo’s part while the best breeze appeared to be better, stronger on the left. Amazingly Cirillo did well, thanks to great boat speed, took the lead at the first mark ahead of Alberini and Lalli. Alberini found another gear on the downwind run taking a massive lead to win over Cirillo and Lalli. Francesco Martino’s Pilot Italia got in on the action for second, Lalli took third.

Making things more than interesting for day two, Cirillo and Alberini are tied in points with Cirillo winning on countback. Lalli is third overall and back only one point.
