Porto Cervo, Italy - Claudi Recchi’s Team 93 (ITA) leads the overall classification after two races run on day one of the Audi Melges 32 World Championship. Recchi, whose team includes Olympic gold medalist (1984, Flying Dragon) and America’s Cup (2000, 2007) sailor Jonathan Mc Kee (USA) on tactics, is followed in second place by Red (GBR), owned by Joe Woods. Pieter Taselaar’s Bliksem (USA) sits in third.

Day one saw two races held in 12 to 13 knots of breeze from 60° which would remain constant throughout the day despite a menacing thunderstorm which formed south of the regatta course. Each of today’s races were windward leewards of approximately 7 nautical miles.
Race One of the event saw Red (GBR) take the lead from the start, at the first windward mark she was followed by Giovanni Maspero’s Joe Fly (ITA) and Andrea Cecchetti’s Bagua (ITA). By the leeward gate Claudi Recchi’s Team 93 had moved up to third place behind Red and Joe Fly and continued her climb up the fleet during the second windward leg to finish second behind Red and ahead of Maspero’s team which had Francesco Bruni calling tactics.

In Race Two it was Vincenzo Onorato’s Mascalzone Latino that took the start and held the lead to round the first mark ahead of Team 93, which also has Flavio Favini (America’s Cup with Mascalzone Latino in 2000 and 2007) aboard. Team 93 overtook Mascalzone, with Adrian Stead on tactics, during the first downwind leg with Pieter Taselaar’s Bliksem (USA) rounding third at the leeward gate. On the second windward leg the Americans on Bliksem passed Mascalzone to move up to second behind Team 93, all three held their positions to the finish.

Racing is scheduled to continue tomorrow, Thursday 24th September, at 12 midday with a maximum of three races to be held on each race day. Tomorrow’s forecast gives north eaterly winds once again, building to 18 to 22 knots in the afternoon.
