Porto Cervo, Italy - Luca Domenici’s Mefisto has taken first place in the fifth and final leg of the Audi Melges Sailing Series organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Porto Cervo. Two bullets and a fourth place were enough to give Domenici a five point delta over Benedetto Giallongo’s Value Team, winner of each of the four previous legs. Fausto Rubbini’s Thule took third place in the fourteen-strong fleet participating in the Porto Cervo event.

After winning legs held in Lerici, Scarlino, Malcesine and Cagliari, a 5,3,3 scoreline in this event assured overall victory in the Audi Melges 20 Sailing series for Value Team, helmed by Francesco Scarselli. Value Team is followed in the final classification by Mefisto and Turnover, owned by Renato Vallivero.

Given that only one windward leeward was held on the first day of racing yesterday, the YCCS Race Committee was eager to get in the maximum three races today. Light and shifty northerly breezes accompanied the first two races of the day, bringing the series to a total of three races held, but a wind shift and fading breeze accompanied by a menacing thunderstorm on the horizon at the start of race four convinced PRO Peter “Luigi” Reggio to send the fleet back to port.

Mefisto took first place in the first race of the day, the second in the series, followed by Lanfranco Cirillo’s Fantastica and Value Team. Race three saw Thule cross the finish line first ahead of newcomer to the series Calvi Network, owned by Carlo Alberini. Value Team was third.

Prizes were awarded to the top classified boats in the event and the series overall during the prize giving ceremony held in the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Clubhouse this afternoon.

The YCCS sailing calendar continues with the Audi Melges 32 World Championship from tomorrow, Monday 21st September with racing scheduled to start at 12 midday on Wednesday 23rd and concluding on Sunday 27th September. The event represents the first edition of World Championship for the class and 30 boats are enrolled.
