SLAM Advanced Technology Sportswear Named Apparel Sponsor For 2009 Melges Midwinter Regattas
25 February 2009
High tech sailing sportswear manufacturer SLAM will officially support the Melges 17, MC Scow and C Scow fleets for the first time ever at each of the classes Midwinter Championships during the month of March.
The 2009 Melges Midwinter Championships scheduled to take place in Lake Eustis, Fla., hosted by the Lake Eustis Sailing Club has named sailing gear and sportswear manufacturer SLAM as the official apparel sponsor for the 10-day long regatta extravaganza. As part of the apparel sponsorship, SLAM will be providing bags or gear as trophies.
An onsite SLAM store will feature the international brand's finest products such as spray tops, jackets, salopettes, technical clothing and base layers, shorts, vests and other accessories with a percentage of the proceeds going to the event and the fleet.
"I have worn SLAM's gear now for more than two years and still have my original pieces. They're light weight, durable and very comfortable, which when I am out on the water, that enables me to focus more on racing and winning." says Mary Anne Ward, Regatta Chair and 2008 Melges 17 National Ranking Champion. "I just love their products and they look great too. SLAM will have a display at the club, so everyone should take time to look at the clothing and invest."
The Melges 17 and C Scow Midwinter Championships kick-off the two week race of champions on March 13-15. The MC Scow Midwinter regatta will be held the following weekend on March 19-21 where more than 60 boats will be in attendance.
OEM Melges Performance Sailboats is also a major Midwinters sponsor and will offer its world famous, two-day Zenda University to the MC Scow fleet. Practice drills, starts, mark roundings and coaching will be provided by the company's President Andy Burdick, followed by an educational debriefing with video playback in the afternoon.
SLAM's high quality products go hand-in-hand with Melges racing. "Melges boats produce the best sailors in the world. The best sailors in the world look to the best products in order to remain at the top of their game. We know this is true in their keelboat classes. Many of those same sailors participate in the scow classes." says Filippo Bovio, managing director of SLAM North America. "This is the very first time we have supported the scow classes in this capacity. The sailors here are quite serious about doing well and being the best. SLAM sailing gear is the perfect match with this attitude. Our unique approach to clothing design and use of innovative fabrics, enable our products to help a team improve their overall performance. We understand that comfort is a key ingredient to winning."
