2008 Melges 17 National Championship In Full Swing On Lake Geneva

27 September 2008

It's no a secret that the Melges 17 sportboat is a lot of fun to sail and offers up a great opportunity to partake in some very competitive racing. This weekend, hosted by the Lake Geneva Yacht Club (LGYC), the Melges 17 will enjoy its fourth U.S. National Championship on the beautiful waters of Lake Geneva, Wisc.

2008 is set to be equally as exciting as the previous three where in 2005 & 2006 Art Brereton won back-to-back titles. In 2007 the fleet traveled to Crystal Lake ultimately won by Iggy Labanauskas. Both will be in attendance, dueling for yet another shot at taking home the title. Others to keep an eye out on is Mary Anne Ward, Bill Wiggins and definitely Ken Wruk with a somewhat home court advantage. Six races are scheduled over the intense two-day series with no throw outs.

The Melges 17 Class has gradually noticed the increasing number of youth teams jumping into the mix. Matt Ripkey, Coye Harrett and Hannah Ripkey are all sailing in Lake Geneva, with a multiple of others rumored to appear.

Friday was spent practicing followed by a fun, welcome cocktail party at LGYC. Saturday, the fleet has plans to hold an official Class AGM (Annual General Meeting) then follow it up with a really fun National Championship Party on the same evening.

Look for Melges Performance Sailboats to be in full force and onsite for support — Harry Melges, Andy Burdick, Charlie Harrett and Jamie Kimball will all be in attendance. The Melges 20 will also be in attendance as this will be the first time for many to see and sail it.

Stay tuned to this website as full race reports, results and photos will posted here as they are made available.
